On tap (not really "on tap" but in a bottle) for today is McGovern's Oatmeal Stout brewed by Belfast Bay Brewing Co. in Portland, ME.
Let's get right to the beer. I am an Oatmeal Stout fan so was expecting a lot more from this beer. I am actually drinking my second to give it a chance to grow on me. Nope. Not a winner.
This is an extremely bitter beer and I don't taste any of the characteristics of a great oatmeal stout. There is a very small hint of chocolate that comes through, but what I really taste are bitter coffee type flavors--I guess I should've put two Splendas in it instead of just one. On top of the bitterness, it's pretty flat. And the aftertaste reminds me of my days working in the science lab, with a chemical and metal taste (and aroma). I guess this is what they meant by don't drink the denatured alcohol.
Time to move on.
