Jewbelation Bar Mitzvah 13th Anniversary Ale

Any superpower that you'd like to have? Melting steel or summoning the fishes or slinging webs to swing around the city? Those are old school. Personally, I'd like to be able to see around corners, no mirrors necessary. That would kick ass! I've got nothing else to say except that my superpower wish would have been great at Chuck E Cheese today and to spy on my neighbors this afternoon. And I have many more diabolical ways to use it.

I picked up Jewbelation Bar Mitzvah 13th Anniversary Ale brewed by Shmaltz Brewing Company in Saratoga Springs, New York, at Total Wine a few days ago. A guy from their brewery had recommended checking it out when it was available. So today is the day. So this beer is obviously to celebrate the brewery's 13th anniversary. They were established in 5757 which is 1996 for you believers. The label is all about 13, too: 13 malts, 13 hops, and 13% of scary alcohol. The 13 story continues in (I'm guessing) 4 pt. almost unreadable font on the label with bar mitzvah stories and lots of things that happened around the number 13. About the only thing that isn't 13 is the volume. It's a big 22 ouncer.

The aroma starts out with some caramel sweetness. Your nose will not miss the boozy alcohol either. The flavors start out fruity, with banana and apple and pear, pretty nice. Big booze comes in to kick out the fruits and never really subsides. You will, however, taste some caramel flavors that do tone down the alcohol a little. Some dark fruit and raisin flavors also make an appearance, and spicy cloves round out the profile. Maybe a slight nuttiness as well. The alcohol is for sure warming, prominent, and sorry, quite a bit annoying. I'm looking forward to 14.

Hey there. This is Zak Davis from Shmaltz Brewing Company. Thanks so much for picking up a bottle of Jewbelation Bar Mitzvah. Being our 6th in the Jewbelation series, we've seen all elements of the beer grow, including the booziness. This one will definitely be a great beer to let sit for a year or two and then see how it changes. Thanks for the support. L'Chaim!!

Hey Zak. Thanks for the message. Yes, I noticed the 1% increase in alcohol each year. Good suggestion, too, on letting it sit a while.

Finally found a few bottles of J13 at Froogal MacDoogal's Warehouse in Nashville. This is no "chuggin'" beer and definitely has a taste all its own. I have two more bottles I'm going to let sit a while. And by the way that's my photo, there behind the 'la' in Jewbelation. Yeah there, the American flag...

Thanks for stopping by Mark. Yep, I think letting a few sit might take some edge off.

That is so freaking awesome that is your picture on the label. I looked here and blew it up to see closely.
