Black Butte Porter

A couple of my coworkers went to Phoenix on a business trip last week. Needless to say, I got much more than a lousy T-shirt when they got home! These two went out of their way to hit up a grocery store and manufacture a mixed sixer for me. I got four new beers from three breweries I haven't had the opportunity to sample yet. So huge thanks! (I don't think these guys even read here, to tell the truth).

One other comment. And don't bother calling me bitter or a bad sport because I already know! Of course, by now you all know the Phillies lost the World Series. You may not know how I feel about the American League in general, though, so I'm going to share that with you. The Designated Hitter is not a baseball position! Period! Therefore, real baseball is only played in the National League. Which makes the selection of DH Hideki Matsui as MVP of the World Series all the more sour tasting. The end, and we'll see you in April, bitches!

Beer me! I've been looking at this beer all day, literally considering it was brought to me this morning. I am talking about Black Butte Porter brewed by Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon. There is a nice little story on the label about Black Butte and pristine waters and that kind of crap. Thanks, butte I'm really more into the beer!

The aroma is really nice with lots of chocolate and coffee. The first thing I thought when I had a little of this to drink was how creamy it is, so silky smooth. Chocolate and coffee flavors are dominant, with a little vanilla in there too, all completely covering the entire mouth. There are some more subtle burnt, roasted, smoky, malty flavors as well. Some light hops are also present which actually help make this beer slightly bitter. The body on this beer is light to medium, a little thinner than I was expecting and desired. The carbonation was very low as well, not flat, but pretty low. However, neither of those qualities detracted from calling this an absolutely great beer! Now, how do I ever in hell get to taste this beer again? I don't know. Drink 'em if you got 'em!

One to add to my growing list. BTW, I had Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale tonight and it was GREAT! Thanks for the recommendation.

Hey bunny. Yes, it was good. They might not have it near you. It came back from Phoenix and is a West Coast beer. Try it when you can.

BBP was the first beer I ever tasted in Portland (when I was underage nonetheless). This beer is why I started drinking beer.

Deschutes has some awesome brews all around but they are considered the "Budweiser" of Portland. Only because of the mass availability.

If you ever come by it try their Cascade Ale. That shit rocks the house! Great summer ale.

OK Cascade Ale is on my list now. Funny you guys consider them Bud b/c of their availability.
