Shiner Bohemian Black Lager

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I still had to work.

I don't know what's going on here in South Florida, but there have been some freaks out lately. In just a few days time I saw:

1. A dude on Flamingo Road in Pembroke Pines (right outside a school) preaching violently. He was dressed in all black and reminded me of Samuel L. Jackson in one of his more violent or angry roles, maybe a cross between "Die Hard" Zeus with his character from Pulp Fiction. As I rounded the corner where he was flailing around, he winked at me. No Shit! I just nodded and he nodded back.

2. Next day, I saw this chick walking her golden retriever up the sidewalk in Plantation. The difference between this woman and a normal dog walker was that she was also in the middle of some all-out-Flashdance-Footloose dance routine at the same time. Leg kicks, twists, everything! I'm not sure it was just for exercise either, although she was surely getting some. She definitely wanted attention. The dog was clearly embarrassed, too. It's a shame to abuse animals like that!

3. Who's next? Can't wait to see who shows up tomorrow!

Tonight I'm drinking Shiner Bohemian Black Lager brewed by The Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas. This beer was first brewed a few years ago to commemorate their 97th anniversary. The label also suggests you "SPREAD CHEER WITH SHINER BEER!" Twist-off cap for the record.

Roasted caramel with a little nutty aroma. Malty to start with roasted coffee, chocolate and caramel. Those flavors are thinned out immediately by some hops and light citrus. There is definitely a smokey aspect on the back end of things before you proceed to a basically flavorless finish. A little on the thin side and a little more on the flat side, but overall not bad. I'd drink it again.

Where can you buy Shiner Black Label here in South Florida? I've looked and called around... nothin'!

Hey Daniel. I am not sure. If Total Wine doesn't have it, no one likely does. Shiner products are just returning to S. FL recently, so it could be a matter of time.

I honestly don't remember where I got this beer from. My best guess is a friend brought it back from a Texas business trip, which I know doesn't help you. Sorry.

I'll ask around and report anything I find here.

Daniel. The assistant manager of Total Wine in Fort Lauderdale's store told me look next to the Shiner Bock. They carry it, as do all the local Total Wine stores. Call ahead to be sure, but it should be there.

Not any more you can't. Was in the Pines store yesterday and they had one six of black and some single bottles and cans of Bock. Said they dropped it from their list. Got the same story about everything but the Bock from Whole Foods on Peters too which is funny since they are from Austin.

On a lighter note, I bitched enough at the Marriott Harbor Beach for them to add it the bock, it's in cans but so what. There's a barbecue place across from UM that has it on tap and now almost all Publix carry it.

Takes a while for a transplant from Texas to get used to things here but I'm trying.

Hey Texas Transplant. Are you following me around? Pines Total Wine? Whole Foods on Peters (though I don't shop there)? LOL.

I guess it's nice that you're passionate about the Shiner brand, but eventually some of the stuff from around here will rub off on you.

See you around.
