Aprihop 2010

Tonight I'm drinking Aprihop brewed by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, Delaware. The label says this is "a serious India Pale Ale brewed with real apricots". Now the last time I drank this beer, Harry Kalas died! Although the two events were most likely not connected, both sucked! The word on the street, however, was that the recipe was tweeked this year and it is very different. So I asked Dogfish on Twitter if that was the case. Before they could respond, if they were planning on doing so, a friend of mine told me I should just hear it from Dogfish founder Sam (Calagione) myself.

Off to the one-minute video. Apparently, they let the recipe "get away from them" in the past few years but have returned it to a hoppier beer with apricots less prominent in the flavor profile. So here we go with Round Two. I so want this to be spectacular!

Plenty of apricots for an aroma, but there is a definite hoppy and floral aspect, too. Fruity peach and a little pine in your nose as well. Ah, now this is already much different than the beer from last year. Hoppy, oily, lightly bitter to start, and the apricots are there but only as an accent. Good crispness, refreshing and balanced. Dry finish. I am glad to have bought this again and think it is a really nice beer. It's great that DFH listened to a bunch of complainers and altered the recipe to make a really solid beer. Check it out for sure!
