Double Dog Double Pale Ale

Tonight I'm drinking Double Dog Double Pale Ale brewed by Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, Maryland. I originally reviewed this last October. The label depicts a scary dog in a diaper. It's just about to toss down two mugs of beer, glass and all. The story on the back of the label talks about big bitter IPA's and compares this beer to those with the exception that "[Flying Dog had] the common courtesy to finish [the beer] with a well-balanced, rich and full body, complete with a hint of sweetness". Vintage 10GG.

Hoppy with pine resin; grapefruit, orange, citrus, floral aroma: quite powerful and inviting! Big grapefruit and orange rind bitter start right out of the gate, quite the little bitter bitch! Lots of pine flavors as well. Malty caramel, with a great balancing sweetness then moves in, just like they said it would. There is an oily texture which completely covers your mouth. The 11.5% alcohol is not noticeable except for a persistent, yet not harsh, little burn and and warmth afterward. Creamy, good body, nicely carbonated. A long and lingering bitterness, well, lingers for a long time! If you bothered to read my review linked above from last October, which I just did, it seems as if I were drinking another beer. Amazing. I was probably pissed off that day or something! I really enjoyed this and you will too! Finally, IBU: 85... that one's for you Marie!

Again, no pictures. Can't find the camera and if I ask the wife where it is, she's gonna say... "why, so you can take pictures of beer bottles?" I think I'll not deal with that today! BTW, why don't every single one of you readers do me a favor and leave a comment today. Google tells me how many of you read this and how long it took you to do so, so even if you say "this is stupid" or "double dog bite me" go right ahead. I want to hear what is on your mind. Come on, it'll take less than a minute.

I hate reruns.

Uh oh, Ed.

#1. I'm pretty sure you didn't even know me when I first reviewed this beer. Betting you haven't read backwards at all.

#2. The reviews are so starkly different that they may as well be written by (well, you and me (or Vanessa)), and

#3. Dude, I buy this crap at your store. After 625 review or whatever it is, with 10-15% coming from alternate routes, I need some more options in your stores! Help me change the laws!

I was going to ask what was up with the re-reviews. Not that I care. Just interesting that you're cycling back through. Run out of good beer to review in Florida?

P.S. this is stupid

P.S.S. double dog bite me

Hi Lost.

I'm a little in a rut. I have new beers but most are 22's and I don't feel like it. Plus the re-reviews are originally from 8-20 months ago. It's not like I had DFH 60 last night then review it again in a week.

I can't even remember what I had for dinner (though I am certain there was meat in there). And you know what? After I trashed this beer in the 09 year, I liked it this time. Another look is cool.

And finally... Google tells me that 80% or more of my daily traffic is newbies. So everything is new for them. If I were able to figure out how to retain a few hundred people a day, I would be, um, who?, uh, famous!

yeah baby yeah! I got to try this one on draft at the indy microbrew fest last year. It's friggin' great.

Also: bite me.

Hey Marie. Did you see that I put the IBU number there just for you?

LOVE Double Dog. I haven't had it in a long time though, should probably re-visit.

Also, I think it's good to re-review if your opinion has changed. Palates often change over time, and the quality of batches of beer can change from year to year, so it's well worth it.

I'll let you in on a little secret. I was going to re-review this beer even if my opinion hadn't changed. :)

I am very happy that I enjoyed it much more this time though!

What are you saying exactly?? That we have drastically different opinions or something?? ;)

Double dog bite me, I love this one too :)

Beer Drinker Rob said...

oh, yeah. I see, in the extracurricular comments with Ed. For a while you were loving the ones I couldn't stand. It's comedy :)

This is a really good beer and the price is right as well! Let's toast on it!

I am the beer manager for a large liquor retailer in the Houston, Texas area. At my store, we sell a lot of Flying Dog brews and this is one of the most popular.

I agree that tastes change over time. I find your reviews (and re-reviews) to be of interest to my fellow workers and some customers. Keep 'em coming!

Hi Brewing Ron. Thank you very much and it's awesome to know you're sharing them with other people. This beer is terrific and no wonder it's a store favorite!

I will have to try this one now!

PS, have you have the Terrapin Rye Squared? It will rock your socks off.

Dude, you have to come to NEGA for a long weekend so we can go on a Georgia beer tour--Terrapin in Athens, Sweetwater in the ATL (I am ever so conveniently located halfway between both). Then, I will take you to Hop City. My hubs can be our DD. It will be awesome! :)
