He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A.

Tonight I'm drinking He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A., a double IPA brewed with rye malt by Shmaltz Brewing Company in Saratoga Springs, New York. It's R.I.P.A. not RIPA like Kelly of Regis fame! I am on a bit of a kick with repeating big IPA's and others I've enjoyed around a year ago. This one is no exception, with my first review back in June, 2009. Last time I had a 22 ouncer, tonight only 12. Good thing for super-computers as Shmaltz had to shrink a whole Bible onto this label.

The top neck label has a head shot of Leonard Alfred Schneider, aka Lenny Bruce. If you haven't figured it out, this beer is dedicated to him. Born 10/13/1925. Died 8/3/1966. Also at the top are quotes from All About Beer and Beer Advocate saying how awesome this beer is. I'm pretty sure I'm next in line for a label quote! The main label is a bit of a marquis honoring Lenny. Kosher? Check! There is a really long story about Lenny in like 2 pt font. I think you can read it yourself with my fabulous photography below!

Rye, caramel, malty and hoppy aroma, really diverse and quite nice. Big bitter start, yet that was washed away with an immediate malty sweetness. The rye flavors are present and very distinct. Then repeat... This time some orange rind and more astringent flavors lasted a little longer before the caramel and tea flavors balanced it out. Big pine! Sappy (still not like Kelly Ripa) but not syrupy, sticky. Lots of spicy black pepper can be found after you've had a few sips. Good body, good carbonation, a definite treat! You will have a dry alcohol finish and quite a bit of warmth from the 10% content this beer offers. For me, the best part was that it's Kosher. Hahaha, just kidding and making sure you read all the way to the end. An excellent choice and I was happy to see it in a 12 ounce offering.

Here is the label story. Hopefully if you click it, it will be readable. Otherwise get a magnifying glass!

Kelly Ripa is pretty easy on the eyes, too. That is just for the record though.

You had me right up until the picture of Kelly Ripa...she reminds me of Skeletor ;)

And, for the record; I am so glad they are selling this in 12oz bottles now! Brilliant move.

Come on, Vanessa. It was a theme.

R.I.P.A. not RIPA, so classic.

Then sappy but not like Ripa because she's sappy. That is hall of fame! You think this is easy? Hahahahaha.

Ask your husband. Skeletor or Cute? There have been points in her life I guess she could have used a sandwich, but she's not that bony.

I'm really glad they move it to 12 too. Great beer. They only had their "everyday beers" in 12's before, but I bet that wasn't good for bottom line.

I'll talk to YOU later.

I've seen this one a lot but I've been hesitant to buy it...is that anti-semitic of me? I'll have to pick one up.

No, you were just waiting. That actually puts you in the same category as the brewers!

I would love to have Kelly Ripa serve me a RIPA.

Exactly! Now that's what I'm talking about!

Glad to see I'm not the only perv who had Kelly Ripa come to mind with this beer. Seems like it's universally enjoyed by all but I've avoided a lot of the Schmaltz stuff because it feels so gimmicky. I don't really care if it's kosher because, to quote Chris Rock in "CB4", "I'll eat a pig's ass if you cook it right". I like the tribute to Lenny Bruce but wonder if the beer lives up to the legendary comic. But since everyone's so approving of it I guess I'll give it a shot!

In the end, all that matters is if it's a good beer. And it really is terrific. I find the gimmicky stuff amusing

And I would drink this with Chris Rock or Kelly Ripa (or both, but I'm pretty sure hell would freeze over first).
