a glance at the winners this morning. All the way down in Category #78, Old Ale or Strong Ale, appeared a beer in my refrigerator right now. Yep, Silver Medal Winner Curmudgeon brewed by Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan was mine for the asking tonight. So I said yes! Congratulations to Founders!
Just to be sure, I checked the dictionary for Curmudgeon. Yeah--a crusty, ill-tempered, and usually old man, which is precisely what the label depicts. Old dude, looks all pissed off, white shaggy beard, dressed all in black, scowling from head to toe. Named appropriately so far. I'm pretty sure my wife has this nickname picked out for me when I hit the appropriate age! This guy has 50 IBUs (625 Maries). Curmudgeon came back from my Pittsburgh trip last month. Here we go.
Nice rich aroma, very malty with caramel and ripe fruit and a touch of alcohol. Holy Guacamole! This is the second day in a row I got caught off guard with the intensity of the flavors. Must be losing my touch. What a high-powered malt explosion! Very sweet caramel kicks things off with a high profile booziness on its heels. I guess that's what 9.8% alcohol can do for a beer. There is a heavy wood flavor and some vanilla, along with a dark cherry and a more generic dark fruitiness. A little spicy on the back side and more alcohol warming. I didn't love the bourbonesque quality in this beer and despite some balance, the beer remained quite sweet. Good flavors, though this is probably not my style, and admitting that is the first step. Again, nice job to the brewery!
