Ska Brewing Company in Durango, Colorado. This beer is Ska's 15th Anniversary beer and is a bourbon-barrel aged version of their Euphoria Pale Ale. Wicked! This beer came back from my co-worker's trip to Denver a few weeks ago, and even the owner of the brewery told me it was quite a score--only 90 cases bottled! This is the second beer I've had from Ska; Decadent Imperial IPA also came back from the same Denver trip.
The subtitle for this beer is "Aged and Confused" which is apparently how the skeleton on the label is acting. Tweetie birds and stars around his dead head. Finally, the cap and neck of this 22-ounce bottle was double dipped in blue then red wax. Pretty cool presentation!
Bourbon aroma from the start, boozy but with orange and other citrus jumping through little alcohol rings toward my nose. Got the picture in your head? Beautiful flavors up front with orange leading the way. The hop profile keeps this beer lightly bitter and keeps excellent citrus fruitiness at the forefront. A good dose of bread and light caramel does give a background sweet balance, also quite enjoyable. You never really lose those two flavor aspects as they continue to work together in perfect harmony.
As the beer progresses, a bit of black pepper spicy meets the bourbon. They give a kick while not acting like a dick, completely complementing the rest of the flavors. You know that's a compliment from me because I'm the first one to usually cry asshole about the bourbon-barrel experience. Good wood too! Creamy and very smooth with perfect carbonation. I just adore the sweet and orange interaction with that little bitter spicy nip. This was really a terrific beer! Happy Anniversary, Ska!
