Thunder Hole Ale

Today I'm drinking Thunder Hole Ale brewed by Bar Harbor Brewing Company in Portland, Maine. This is a World Beer Championships Gold Medal winner in the Brown Ale category. Not sure what year. The label depicts a photo of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against a jetty. This one came home with my friend who recently was vacationing in Maine. Best enjoyed before December, 2011.

Cocoa aroma with a nice nutty backdrop, slightly sweet too. Aroma prepped palate perfectly. Cocoa flavors followed by some sweet brown sugar. That sweetness gets a hoppy dose midway and turns to barely bitter. A hint of nuts and roasted malt and that's about it for flavors. Those flavors are really very nice, but what makes this brown ale so interesting is the high level of prickly carbonation aggressively attacking the palate. Body is a little light but the nice aftertaste makes up for it. I liked it!
