Newcastle Winter IPA

Today I'm drinking Newcastle Winter IPA brewed by The Caledonian Brewery Company in Edinburgh, UK. A pair of these beers was a gift from the communications agency representing Newcastle. The first thing you will notice is that apparently this brewery does have access to brown glass. Bravo. The label remains the same as their other brands, the exception being the color scheme. The neck label calls this a "Brilliant British Ale".

A story titled "Brighten Your Day" appears on the back. Their aim is to "pleasantly surprise [me]" with this beer. I'll let you read the rest in your free time. I'll be drinking this out of my Newcastle Brown Ale glass that the same agency provided me a while back. Thanks guys!

Herbal and minty aroma, earthy with sweet caramel. Herbal flavors, too. Sweet syrupy caramel also dominates the beginning. Those initial flavors are then attacked by an ugly bitterness. This is not only ugly on the outside but on the inside too! (I don't want you to think I'm a phony.) Grassy, lemon rind, bathroom cleanser. Horrible taste, worse aftertaste. The phenolic, medicinal blech left behind in my mouth is so revolting I gotta go brush my teeth. Glad they hedged their bets by calling it a Limited Edition. Dump.

That's disappointing. I remember before I got into craft beers, Newcastle was my go to beer. Now it just tastes a little watered down compared to what I'm used to. I was hoping their IPA would be something that gets me to try them again.

The Brown Ale is still by far the best, though there are many better beers. I haven't enjoyed their experiments at all. This was no exception.

Wow, you must have gotten a bad batch! I'm no fan of their watered-down brown ale, but I thought this beer was wonderful. It's no American IPA, (which I hate because they all taste like concentrated grapefruit and pine needles) but this is a textbook example of an BALANCED English IPA. Actually, one of the best beers I've had in quite a while.
