Old Boardhead Barleywine Ale 2011 Reserve

Today I'm drinking Old Boardhead Barleywine Ale, 2011 Reserve, brewed by Full Sail Brewing Company in Hood River, Oregon. The label is very simple, loudly stating the beer name over a giant 11 in the background. The brewery describes this beer as "a deliciously rich barleywine ale with spectacular depth & delicacy of flavor that is deep & robust. Its full, sweet body is balanced with Centennial & Crystal hops for a pleasant hoppiness & finish. Makes a great cellar brew." Let's get it on!

Sweet toffee and piney aroma. Candied orange and sweet caramel flavors are the opening stars. Really liked that introduction. Some sweet tea flavors also accompany them. Piney hops jump in next and feel like they are about to stab your palate but then just give up, perhaps a little like the dancing gangs in West Side Story. (Yeah, I know. I am like that in real life too!)

Light citrus and spice, and the 9% alcohol gives some warmth and a spirits-like cleanse. Clean, yet still a little sticky. The finish has a light medicinal feel to it. Smooth, perhaps a little thin, and a little light on the carbonation. I did enjoy the sweet candy orange in the beginning, my favorite part. Nice flavors, an easy drinker.
