Chatoe Rogue First Growth Creek Ale

Today I'm drinking Chatoe Rogue First Growth Creek Ale brewed by Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon. I grabbed this from a bargain shelf at Total Wine last week. Though there are no dates on the bottle, the sticker Total put on there says 6/5/2011. The label tells a story headlined with "Dedicated to Farmers and Fermenters". This is one of their GYO beers, Grow Your Own, where the hops and barley were grown by Rogue.

Cherry aroma, a little tart, and very malty as well. Sweet malty caramel flavors are dominant in the beginning, quite rich. Very low carbonation, offering a chewy and thick body. Though the cherries are noticeable, they are also buried in the background.

There is a light nutty candy-bar type flavor and some cherry skin tannins that bob in and out, interesting nuances. A little tartness remains into the aftertaste. That's about it. Smooth though I didn't dig the flatness. Decent flavors but whatever overall. Not bad. I could have certainly used a little tart cherry bang to contrast the richness and some carbonation to add refreshment. I'm not sure that they even brew this beer anymore, but in case you see it...
