Longshot Derf's Secret Alt

Today I'm drinking Samuel Adams' Longshot Derf's Secret Alt brewed by The Boston Beer Company in Boston, Cincinnati or Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. This will be my second from this year's Longshot series, the first being Five Crown Imperial Stout a few days ago. I'm not sure if he's Derf or not, but this beer was created by homebrewer Fred Hessler. He is pictured on the front label. Enjoy Before August, 2012.

Sweet caramel, brown sugar, light roast and a touch of nuttiness in the aroma. The flavors start off sweet too, but there is more of a distinct toffee flavor than anything else. Some of that signature Sam herbal flavor shows alongside subtle sweet orange nuances. Hoppy citrus balance keeps the sweetness in check, though sweet definitely wins overall.

The 9.3% alcohol is more than noticeable, especially after drinking a few sips. It becomes a little annoying that it isn't well incorporated. I actually almost did that alcohol shiver a few times. Close! The finish is sweet and very dry. Nice flavors but the alcohol is not a positive attribute in this one.
