Shiner Ruby Redbird

Today I'm drinking Shiner Ruby Redbird brewed by the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas. Last April, when I first reviewed this beer, I found it to be kind of so-so. But the amazing part about the review was that people were linking to it everywhere, on Facebook, on forums and there was this kind of argument ranging from best summer beer ever to horrible. My photos ended up in dozens of places (please ask first), and the post is one of the most popular ever with over 4000 hits. I guess Shiner has an army of passionate warriors or something.

So I decided to give it another try, see if my perception is different this year. The label is the same; the story is the same. They are still using Rio Grande Valley Grapefruits and All Natural Ginger. Serve Ice Cold on Hot Days!

Weak aroma very much dominated by ginger, with an earthy grain aspect too. Dominant ginger flavors in the beginning too, but at least you do taste some juicy grapefruit, a relief from the ginger. Sweet and a little tart but not bitter. A tiny amount of lemon citrus is also noticeable.

Good carbonation, to the point of being a little rough. Dirty, earthy finish with more ginger is how the experience ends. The ginger domination is a total turn off, completely fighting some otherwise refreshing aspects of the beer. Again, not something I will go to (or maybe I'll try again as an April ritual, who knows)!

Please be sure to let me know where I'm going wrong (or, God forbid, right, with this review). I have another idea, too. Take a very short moment to subscribe to new content from this blog now. One email with your morning coffee, that's it. I won't bother you. Promise!

Try adding about 3 oz of Bacardi Oakheart with it into a frozen glass. I tried this beer for the first time yesterday and thought it was okay, but adding the rum made me enjoy it a lot more.

Hmmm. Interesting. I haven't really experimented with any beer cocktails yet. Perhaps I'll give it a try.

Shiner Ruby RedBird is delicious. Also Magic Hat Elder Betty Is delicious. Grapefruit and Ginger really has nothing to do with the summer but together makes a delicious light summer beer.
