Monkey Fist IPA

Today I'm drinking Monkey Fist IPA brewed by Shipyard Brewing Company in Portland, Maine. This is a new IPA by the brewery. There is an angry monkey with a fistful of hops on the label, perhaps looking like he's trying to escape capture. Best Enjoyed Before Dec 12.

Quite piney and hoppy spicy aroma with just a little orange sweetness in the background. A double-dose of pine bursts in your mouth upon the first sip. The hoppy spiciness and bitterness translates right away too, really nipping at your palate. Lightly floral flavors and a wannabe malt balance come next.

The flavors build to an undesirable astringency by the end, showing some medicinal and alcohol characteristics at the finish. The extremely dry finish highlighted a very noticeable 6.9% alcohol. This beer lacked any kind of malty sweet balance, even just a little. It wasn't bad, but their XXXX IPA kicked this beer right in the fist!
