You guys know I love you, right? That's why year after year I bring you some Shiner Holiday Cheer. Prior cheer: 2012, 2011, 2010! Yep, finally the pumpkins and fest beers are out the door!
Shiner Holiday Cheer is a Bavarian-Style Dark Wheat. Same packaging as previous years including the cap made to look like a package tag... To: You, From: Shiner. The colors are Christmasy and made to look like that present. The label also reminds you this is an "ale brewed with peaches and pecans."
Malty caramel aroma with just a touch of sweet peach, very enjoyable. Toasted malty flavors to start. Lots of caramel and prunes. Nice little hoppy play keeps the beer well balanced, not sweet at all. The peaches are very noticeable and add a little sweetness at the finish of every sip. Pecans not so much, seemed more of an afterthought. Good body, low-medium carbonation. Interesting idea that I'll continue to check out each year!

I saw Smuttynose Vunderbar! Pilsner on clearance the other day, and based on its Beer Advocate grades, grabbed four six packs for $4 each. I guess in New Hampshire they have seasons or something, but it is 95°F here today! The label depicts an old photgraph of a middle-aged German couple in some fancy festival clothes, beer steins in hand.
Crisp, lemony aroma, a little grainy and spicy too. Very pleasant. Nice toasted grain flavor nicely balanced with a lemony bitterness. Some grassy flavors too. But that's it. Simple and flavorful. Nice carbonation adds a little sharpness. Crisp, clean and refreshing. Good call, BA!

My original recap only had a handful of the few hundred pictures I took last weekend at Grovetoberfest. Here are more that show some of the breweries and crowds.

Yesterday afternoon, I went as a member of the Press to the Third Annual Grovetoberfest beer festival at Peacock Park in Coconut Grove, Florida. It was a beautiful yet incredibly hot day, perfect for some beery refreshments! And there were plenty to be had. I got reacquainted with some old favorites and tried a handful of new treats for the first time. My wife and thousands of others also sampled hundreds of options and picked out their own personal winners.
Along the way, I bumped into lots of friends, some I knew a long time and others I had only met online. (BTW, that joke I heard a bunch of times about me never leaving SW Broward is getting old and isn't even accurate.) I was amazed by the amount of beer brands that were represented in the shirts that attendees were wearing. And as promised, I took photos of dozens of those. YOU MUST CLICK AND GO LOOK!
