Sweet Potato Casserole Strong Ale

Funky Buddha recently bottled and shipped this year's version of Sweet Potato Casserole Strong Ale, their seasonal alternative to the dreaded pumpkin beer. This beer is brewed with sweet potatoes, vanilla and spices. The label depicts cartoonish marshmallows bathing in a steaming sweet potato casserole--very nicely done. The little story goes on to let you know you should also expect marshmallows to contribute to the beer's character. Bottled on 19/09/15. 7.9% alcohol.

Marshmallow and spice aroma, subtle yet intriguing. BIG Marshmallow flavors to start. BIG! Spicy cinnamon and allspice, with brown sugar sweetness as well. Sweet and earthy, and while the sweet potato is clearly noticeable, I don't know that I could have named the vegetable.

Very interesting and unique. Sweet but not overly so--there is definitely enough alcohol kick and hint of hops to bring some balance to an otherwise sweet beer. I liked this a lot. I liked the idea, the ingredient choices, packaging, execution, and definitely the flavors! Check it out for sure (and ditch all pumpkin beers).
