OK. I've had Southern Tier's Choklat Imperial Stout. And it's awesome. Today I'm going to try Choklat Oranj, the same beer brewed with orange peels. This one came in a 4-pack for like $18 and my single bottle was a bomber-level price of $6. That's a little out of control, but OK, this time. I'm pretty sure those bombers still are $9, so this is basically a reverse #bomberboycott!
There's an ingredients and stats section. 10.0% alcohol. DOB which I assume is date of bottling 3/17/16 though I'm not positive about that because half of the stamp didn't hit the label.
Chocolate, cocoa, coffee aroma, more luxurious with a little warmth. Rich chocolate and light coffee and roasted malt flavors start. After a few sips, the orange flavor subtly builds. There is a distinct and sharp citric bitterness in the background, a nice interesting addition to the regular beer. Alcohol shows a little at the finish, though just fine. Definitely tasty, though way too expensive to compete with many equal or "awesomer" competitors.

Tom Yum Thai Gose by Tomoka Brewing in Port Orange, Florida? Hell Yeah! This can comes with a sort of apologetic story explaining how hot peppers, coriander, salt and lemongrass can work in a gose, leading with "oddly refreshing!" And to top it off, the Tom Yum ingredients are pictured on the label. 4.2% alcohol. 7 IBUs.
Interesting peppery, lemony, salty, herbal aroma grabs your attention. A LOT GOING ON! You can definitely taste the base gose, nicely tart, lemony, lightly sour. But there are definitely so many other flavors begging for your attention.
Peppery spicy at the start followed by tart lemons and limes. Then salty with some lemongrass and herbs. All distinct, yet, oddly, working together.
A low-grade burn hits your lips after a few sips. I really liked this in the most weird way and bet it would be great to cook with. A+ for creativity and I bet it took a lot of experimentation to come up with this final recipe. Check it out!

A few months ago I checked out MIA Beer Company. They now are canning a few of their beers, including Tourist Trappe Belgian-Style Tripel, which I'm trying again today! Red and orange maze design can. 10% alcohol. Canned FEB/06/16.
Muted sweet candy and orange aroma. Orange, sweet, cotton candy flavors. A little spicy. A lot alcy, especially at the finish. Good body but like the aroma, fairly soft flavor profile. Beer matches name. Subtle and crafty, like a good tourist scheme (not like a Brewers Association definition and more like a Beastie Boys song.) Not my favorite, a little weak on flavor. Grab a sample in your next flight at the brewery!

I decided to check out Founders Mosaic Promise today. This is a single hop (Mosaic) and single malt (Golden Promise) beer brewed to benefit Grand Rapids' annual art ArtPrize competition. Not sure who the hot Goddess carrying the hops and grain is on the label, but I like her! 5.5% alcohol. 50 IBUs. Bottled On 02/29/16
Beautiful tropical pineapple aroma. Fruity tropical sweet flavors come first followed by some nice orange tanginess. A nice little bitter citrus and piney bit answers with some balance. There is also a distinct grainy flavor that stands out too!
Light lemon and grapefruit astringency build after a while. Wanted more fruity sweetness. Good but not awesome! Single hops and single malts are overrated in general, and not just beer! GO with the HATE!

After getting a taste with Anchor's Brewmaster a few weeks back, I decided to check out Anchor Saison Spring Ale today. The story on the neck label offers some history as well as sets your expectations for this "traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist." The California twist is the lemongrass, lemon peel and ginger the beer was brewed with. 7.2% alcohol.
Wheaty, grainy aroma with soft fruit, spicy ginger and a touch of lemon. Wheaty twang with a definite Belgian yeasty component. Lots of bold spices with ginger standing WAY out. Peppery with some lemon nuances as well. Alcohol shows at the finish, bringing out the ginger even more.
Not bad all around, but while I love ginger in general, there are limits. In this case, I wished there were no ginger by the time the bottle was gone. I bet this would make kick-ass cooking material! As for the beer, was OK, but GIVE ME LIBERTY (Ale) instead!

Chocolate, coffee, roasted malty aroma. Creamy texture full of milk chocolate and coffee flavors. Nice roast, a little spicy, pumpernickel bread.
Good flavors, good balance. Sweet with some roasty bitterness and a hint of smoke. Also great texture. I like 'em a little sweeter but pretty yum. Check it out!

Almost zero head, was a little strange. Tropical orange aroma, lightly sweet and certainly not jumping out of the glass. Big bitter zesty grapefruit citrus starts along with some floral aspects. Tropical hints add a little sweetness.
However, like the aroma, the flavors are somewhat muted. Fruity sweet and piney, citrus bitterness, a generic mash-up of flavors. Dry and lightly astringent finish. Not bad but no wow!

Today I'm checking out New Belgium's Hoppy Blonde. The story sets your expectations: "Jumping with Mosaic hops and a malty backbone toe help soften the landing, HOPPY BLONDE is a full flavored free-fall that's perfect for celebrating spring." The story also explains the two parachuters on the label. 5.7% alcohol. Best By 10JUL16
Fruit and citrus forward, full of tangerines, lemons and tart apples. Definitely hoppy! Citrus, lemony sharpness and tartness. Grassy, and the the wild card is the basket of flower petals in your mouth. A hint of sweet malty backbone exists, but this beer stays bitter throughout.
Astringent and dry at the finish with more lingering flowers left on the palate. I definitely wanted something sweet to grab hold of and less astringency. And that flowery aspect built to an annoyance. Nope!

This year's Sprung! Spring Beer Festival moved from Coconut Grove to its new home in Wynwood! I think that was a great move for a few reasons. First, we still have Grovetoberfest in Coconut Grove and second, Wynwood is the heart of the craft beer movement in Miami. Wynwood, J. Wakefield and Concrete Beach are just a few block's walk away from each other and the festival site as well.
I posted a lot more pictures and longer recap over on SoulOfMiami.org, but wanted to keep the tradition going of posting beer brands the fans wore on their t-shirts. Classics like Sam Adams and Lagunitas to new Florida breweries like Coppertail and Big Storm! Pretty cool!

I saw this beer and thought about you guys! I just couldn't resist picking up a bottle of Shock Top Twisted Pretzel Wheat. This particular shocker label features wheat mohawk guy with a head warmer made from pretzel skins. Brewed with spices, caramel malt and artificial flavors added. 5.1% alcohol. Felt like a dare to myself!
Definite pretzel aroma, nutty, caramel, molasses, salty. Caramel and caramel popcorn flavors come first. And damn, this beer hits the promised pretzel flavor on the head, persistent throughout! Spicy, some toasted malt and again salty. Body was a bit thin.
My guess? This beer gets shit on by Bud haters. I am not in love, but honestly, it's interesting and different and has good flavors (some are artificial, but who cares?). And my semi-beer drinker wife chose it "honestly" over two other (better) solid beers from well-known craft breweries we tried today. Honestly means she has no clue the AB hatred and is judging on taste alone. The End!
