Heavy Seas Dubbel Cannon Belgian Style IPA

First, Happy Mother's Day to all you moms and grandmoms out there. If my wife ever finds out about this blog, that goes for you too, Sweetie! For Mother's Day here, I sent my wife and mi suegra to the beach with the kids and was able to personally opt out of the frying session in the sun. Pretty sweet deal, right? I will make a nice dinner later.

Today I'm drinking Heavy Seas Dubbel Cannon Belgian Style IPA brewed by Clipper City Brewing Company in Baltimore, Maryland. The label says this is a variation of their Loose Cannon IPA, fermented with Belgian Dubbel yeast. Well, I love their Loose Cannon, so this new yeast better not screw things up! Nice whimsical cartoon on the front of the bottle. Uh Oh. Two pirate ships are pointing their cannons right at each other with perhaps a foot in between. The pirates are dueling while one parrot thinks, "Another fine mess..." Purchase before August, 2011.

Bread, tea and malty aroma, sweet with a little yeast and spice. Sweet and sugary start, with a very noticeable yeast component. Fruity orange, a bit of citrus and some bubble gum flavors are all in play. At some point the initial sweetness is tamed, and some spicy black pepper joins the 7.25% alcohol to take a few jabs at your palate. Creamy texture, nice carbonation and body. A light hoppy bitterness takes you to the finish line, which is dry. I guess I still like Loose Cannon better, but this was a very nice cousin! Check it out for sure. And this brewery is really impressing me. Love it!

I bought a mix pack of Heavy Seas brews that included the Dubbel Cannon. Pretty darn good brew. Not as good as the Ommegang BPA, IMHO, but still a darn good beer.

I'm really starting to appreciate and enjoy the Belgian Pale Ale style.

I like this one too. I didn't see a mixed pack, but will look soon.
